We are very familiar with it and how it effects patients both physically and emotionally. One of the many challenges of this disease is the continual change that occurs. Many times during a treatment regimen, chemo has to be discontinued due to the side effects it causes. After treatment is complete, and the patient has been in remission for some time, they will be in a maintenance phase where they will receive chemo intermittently. Although most patients find maintenance chemo to be quite tolerable, it is the time interval between treatments that is where the problems begin. If a patient has been in remission for more than one year, there is a period of time when they will have to begin receiving chemo again. But when do you stop the treatment? What will happen if you stop treatment while still in remission? Although there are some patients who are deemed to have chronic lymphocytic leukemia, there are patients who are able to remain in remission without treatment for a long time, often years. There is no exact number of how long a patient can go in remission, but usually the longer a patient has been in remission, the longer they are able to live without treatment. In some cases, it is possible that a patient could never relapse, even if they stopped treatment. The problem with stopping treatment is that the body stops producing antibodies which will attack the cancer cells. As the body begins to produce fewer antibodies, these cancer cells will begin to proliferate, multiplying and eventually causing the disease to become active again. The cycle of time and disease activity can be very complex, and this is the reason that so many patients receive treatment that is able to last more than one year. The best thing for patients who have been in remission for more than one year is to start a new treatment regimen so that they
